About Grants..
Grants are forms of financial assistance, which are offered to encourage organisations to undertake or to continue activities that would not otherwise happen. Although grants are normally non-repayable, they will not normally cover the whole of the project costs. You must be able to fund the rest of the project costs from other sources.
It's a jungle out there..
In the UK, grants are mainly sponsored by Central Government, Local Government, The European Union, The National Lottery, and many Charitable Trusts. Grants are either administered directly by the sponsor, or by organisations working in partnership with the sponsor. Working in partnership like this, results in a wider spread of the original funds, and will target support to where it is needed most and will be most beneficial.
This method of distribution means that there are a lot of partners, partnerships and partnerships within partnerships, working on a lot of projects, all trying to distribute funds according to main sponsors requirements. This can result in confusion and frustration when you try to search for a grant that could be useful for your project. Add to this the fact that schemes are constantly being changed and replaced. This situation is often referred to as 'the grants jungle'.
Believe it or not..
Unfortunately much grant support available in the UK goes unclaimed by organisations with eligible projects. This is a frustrating fact for both the grant givers and potential applicants. A big reason for this reduced take up is because organisations don't have quick and easy access to information. This is usually because organisations don't have enough time to dedicate to searching for grants.
